Evaluation
A comprehensive assessment to determine current speech, language, and communication skills. I approach evaluations from a neurodiversity-affirming perspective. I seek to understand and support each client as they are, leveraging their strengths and focusing on meaningful, functional skills.
Areas of assessment may include:
- Articulation: speech sound production
- Fluency: speech flow, including stuttering / cluttering
- Voice: voice quality, pitch, volume, and resonance
- Receptive Language: understanding of spoken / written language
- Expressive Language: ability to express thoughts and ideas using words
- Pragmatics: use of language in social contexts
What’s the difference between the traditional approach and a neurodiversity affirming approach to evaluations?
The neurodivergent-affirming approach emphasizes strengths, individual preferences, and functional communication, using positive, respectful, and inclusive language. This approach is collaborative, involving the client and their support network, with goals centered on empowerment, functional communication, and overall well-being. It employs a mix of formal and informal assessment tools, prioritizing functional and contextual relevance to best address the unique needs of each individual.
In contrast, the traditional approach focuses on identifying and “fixing” deficits, aiming to achieve typical developmental milestones. It uses clinical, deficit-oriented language and is typically therapist-led, with less emphasis on input from the client. The goals of this approach are to remediate deficits and reach normative benchmarks, primarily relying on standardized tests and normative data. However, this reliance can be problematic and often fails to include the diverse experiences and identities of clients.
